I need help on this precalculus problem.?
The question is:
You are sailing from the Virginia Eastern Shore of Cheseapeake Bay to the Great Wicomico River on an exceptionally clear day. You can see the southern tip of Tangier Island due north (0 degrees T) of your present position. On your chart you measure the distance from the southern tip of Tangier to the light at the mouth of the Great Wicomico as 13.5 nautical miles; the light is due west of Tangier (270 degrees T). You sight across your compass to the light at the mouth of the Great Wicomico and record a corrected earing of (302 degrees T) HOw many nautical miles (to the nearest tenth) is it from your oat to the Great Wicomico Light?
This question I know a triangle has to be set up with 13.5 on one side .
Draw a "T". Erase the right part of the top of the "T".
The left part of the top of the "T" is 13.5 n miles.
(You a may draw a straight line because the light house is due west.)
Draw a line from the base of your "T" to the top left. This is the length you want to find. It is the hypotenuse of your triangle.
The angle from the "|" part of the "T" to your line is 302 degrees. So the interior angle is 360-302 =58 degrees.
So you have a triangle. The angle is 58 is opposite from 13.5 and you want to find the hypotenuse, call it "H"
so sin(58) = 13.5/H ==> H = 13.5/sin(58) = 15.91 = 15.9 n-miles
