I have a circuit that will use 640 mA, can I use an AC adaptor with an output current of 1000mA to power it?
Basically, I have an led array that I would like to power using an AC adaptor to plug it into the wall. I was wondering if the 1000mA output of the adaptor will overload my circuit and burn out the leds, or will the circuit only pull the 640 mA needed to power the leds.
A circuit will draw the current that it requires. If it requires 640 ma, then that's what it will draw.
An AC adapter must be rated to handle that much, so one rated for 1000 ma will easily handle the demand for only 640 ma.
The problem that people run into with overload is to try sticking too much voltage on a device. Excessive voltage puts a strain on it and will eventually arc right through the device, damaging or destroying it.
