Hiking Bivy

When snowshoeing or skiing in the back country: what Emergency Gear do you carry?

If you went on say a 7 mile round trip day hike in the winter. How heavy of a pack would you carry? would you take a bivy bag or even a Sleeping Bag? Tarp? I know about the so-called 10 essentials and I always take extra clothing and a sit pad.

Food and fluids are number one. Then pack a extra pair of gloves or mits and socks. A shovel is also a necessity. I also carry an extra layer of clothing. I also carry a small Repair Kit/First Aid kit when I go snowshoeing. A couple or wire ties and some rope and a couple of band aids make up my kit. Bring a map and compass. Bring a balaclava and a pair of goggles. I would also bring a Flash Light and some matches. With this stuff you can easily build a quinzee if you get hurt or stuck.
